Certified Master Inspector (CMI)® is both a U.S. and Canadian registered trademark of the Master Inspector Certification Board, Inc. CMI® is the inspection industry’s top professional designation and is awarded to qualifying inspectors who have demonstrated the highest level of competency.
Obtaining the CMI® designation automatically conveys to potential clients that you are a seasoned inspector who has over 1,000 hours of experience, abides by a code of ethics, and has passed a criminal background check. In addition, you have access to myriad benefits, including FREE marketing materials, FREE T-shirts, hats, and other promotional materials, FREE access to continuing education, and more.
The CMI® fee is one time only, and you can opt for the monthly payment plan.
CMI® is a huge marketing tool. Letting your clients know you are the best of the best. You’ve been in business for many years, you’ve completed the education, you’ve performed many inspections. You’re more than qualified and know what you’re doing vs. someone who’s just started their business.

We have a plethora of marketing materials at your disposal once you become a CMI®. It pays for itself over the course of time with the new business it brings you. Of course, that relies on you putting in the initiative to market yourself as a CMI®.

Every Certified Master Inspector® must:
- Have completed 1,000 fee-paid inspections and/or hours of education (combined);
- Have been in the inspection business for at least three years;
- Have been in the inspection business for at least three years;
- Agree to periodic criminal background checks; and
- Submit the application and the one-time fee (no annual dues, ever).
You need not be a member of any particular trade association. The Certified Master Inspector® professional designation is open to all qualifying inspectors. Your application will be processed within 48 hours of receipt of your application and fee. If your application is approved, the Master Inspector Certification Board will issue you a certificate and list you as a Certified Master Inspector® on this website. You may then advertise yourself as a Certified Master Inspector® and Board-Certified. There are no annual dues. If you are not accepted, your money will be returned to you with an explanation.
